MoonTone FX

Latest releases

Every capture is named by the knob and toggle position it was made at, so you know what you are loading.

Built on the MoonTone bench

The captures come from a working shop. Every pedal is dialed in, wired and tested on the same bench that builds custom pedalboards for other players.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose captures

Take a full pack or pick single captures from any pack. Three captures cost $10.

  2. 2

    Check out

Pay securely with Stripe and enter your Neural Cortex Cloud username there so the captures know where to go.

  3. 3

Load them on your Quad Cortex

After you pay, captures are shared to your Cortex Cloud account and work on the Quad Cortex and Quad Cortex mini.

Reading a capture name

MFX Bondi SickAs Med V2

No “2” in the name: the pedal's toggle switch was down. Open, transparent, and good for rhythm.

MFX Bondi SickAs Med 2 V2

A “2” means the toggle was up. More compressed and mid-range focused, which suits leads.

MFX Pref 81 Gld DLrn Mid Gain V2

“Pref” is MoonTone's preferred setting, dialed in by ear to cut through a mix.

From the Test Bench

Short lessons from the pedals on the bench. New ones post on TikTok and Instagram.

Kill the hiss and keep the dynamics

Link two ISP Decimator II noise gates, one first and one last in the gain chain. All the gain hiss goes and your guitar dynamics stay.

Where a TS808 sits best

An Ibanez TS808HWV2 works best stacked into other gainy pedals, not at the end of the gain chain.

Captures

For the Neural DSP Quad Cortex and Quad Cortex mini. Open a pedal to see every capture, its photos and its price. Three captures cost $10, or add a whole pack.

How a MoonTone capture is made

I do not capture random knob positions.

Hours on the bench first

I work through each pedal and all of its settings for hours, tuning the best sounds for different players and situations, and I write every one of them down. My favorites become the “Pref” MFX captures.

Photos and settings included

While I capture, I photograph the pedal at each setting. Every pack you buy includes the captures, a photo of the pedal at the captured settings and a detailed settings list, so you can recreate the sound on the real pedal if you buy one. Older packs, like Bondi SickAs and Mori, were made before I added the photos.

Want your own pedal captured?

Send the pedal's name and the sound you want, and you will get a quote. Rare and boutique pedals are welcome, including a hand-wired, made-in-Japan Ibanez TS808HWV2 that is available for custom captures.

Questions

What do I need to use these?

A Neural DSP Quad Cortex or Quad Cortex mini. MoonTone captures are made for those two right now. ToneX and NAM formats of some packs are available by request.

How do I receive my captures?

Enter your Neural Cortex Cloud username at checkout. After you pay, I share the captures to your account and email you a confirmation once they have been shared.

What does “pick three for $10” mean?

Single captures are sold in groups of three. Pick one to three captures and pay $10, four to six and pay $20, and so on. Whole packs cost less than picking every capture separately.

Where do I start?

Try the Pref captures. They are MoonTone's preferred settings and are made to cut through a mix. Then explore the gain steps around them.

Are there free captures?

Yes. Free packs, like the MXR Custom Shop Hybrid Fuzz V2, are posted on MoonTone's Cortex Cloud profile. Follow the profile to hear about new ones.

Pedalboards and signal chain consulting

I build effects pedalboards and review signal chains for guitarists who care how their pedals work together, whether that is a stompbox board, a Quad Cortex setup or both.

Pedalboard building

A custom board built around your application, or a build on an off-the-shelf board that you supply or that I buy for you. I wire it with your pedals, or source the pedals for you.

Consulting

Pedalboard planning: a remote video session of about one to two hours.
Signal flow: remote by video, or in person around Northeast Florida. I replicate your gear (within reason) on my bench and help you dial in your sound.

The Patriot

A red, white and blue board with a Morningstar controller up front and a full row of compact pedals behind it, all on a Cioks power platform. Everything has a place, a label and a short cable run.

The Stryfecta

Three Strymon pedals (BigSky, Timeline and Mobius) on an upper deck, over a lower tier of drive pedals and a Morningstar MC6 controller. The whole board is MIDI-controlled, and a hinged panel opens to show the power and wiring underneath.

The signal chain is engraved on the board:

In → Fuzz → Comp → Mobius (pre) → DDB → Boost → 123 → Mustang → Iridium → Mobius (post) → Deco → Timeline → Big Sky → Out (ST)

Quad Cortex and compact builds

Boards built around a Quad Cortex or Quad Cortex mini, plus small boards for players who want less to carry.

Documented, so you can maintain it

Every build is labeled: signal chain, MIDI channels, power outputs. When you change a pedal later, you know exactly what connects to what.

Examples from the bench

The kind of problem a consult solves.

Gain hiss

Two ISP Decimator II noise gates linked, one first and one last in the gain chain, remove the hiss and keep the dynamics of your playing.

Overdrive placement

An Ibanez TS808HWV2 sounds best stacked into other gainy pedals, not at the end of the gain chain.

Everything from my bench is streamed through a Universal Audio Apollo X4 Gen 2 interface, so what you hear is true to the gear.

About MoonTone

Enabling musical creativity: pedal tones, pedalboards and signal chains from Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

Emilio, founder of MoonTone FX
Guitarist since age 8Pedalboard builderAudio flow consultant

I have played guitar since I was eight, and I bought my first pedal at seventeen with allowance money I had saved. As an adult I realized pedals did more than change my sound. They widened what I could express.

In 2009 I started building pedalboards for myself and for musician friends. Word got around that I could dial in a great tone with almost any gear, and soon friends were asking me to set up their rigs for shows and studio sessions. Years of chasing tone (and a healthy case of GAS) meant buying, using and selling a lot of pedals, from vintage analog to the newest digital and hybrid modelers. Along the way I started working with digital amp modelers and hybrid setups. In 2024, MoonTone became an official company.

I have built a deep collection of overdrives and fuzzes. Many are rare, expensive or both, and most players will never get to try them. Capture technology has changed that. The Neural DSP Quad Cortex and Quad Cortex mini recreate drive pedals faithfully, so you can own the sound without paying collector prices or hunting for months.

My background is in engineering and product development, and I bring the same rigor to every capture and every build. I love all styles of music, but 90s rock, grunge and alternative are home base.

What makes a MoonTone capture different

Dialed in, not random

I spend hours with each pedal and all its settings, tuning for different players and situations, and I write everything down. My favorite settings become the “Pref” MFX captures.

You get the settings too

Each pack includes the captures, a photo of the pedal at the captured settings and a detailed settings list, in case you buy the pedal and want to recreate the sound later.
